One fella · One pan · No idea when to stop

The Jam Man

Fruit went in at half nine. Something magnificent came out. We don't fully understand it either, but it's £3 a jar.

⚠ Contains fruit, sugar, and an unreasonable amount of enthusiasm

Man makes jam. City in uproar.

Proper homemade jam, none of your supermarket wallpaper paste. Boiled up fresh, potted by hand, and it'll see off your nan's any day — don't tell her though, she'll only sulk. £3 a jar. Two for a fiver.

Sources close to the pan confirm the fruit went in at half nine and has not been seen since. Neighbours reported a smell "that made me forget what I came upstairs for".

Six flavours are in circulation this week. When they're gone they're gone, because there's one fella, one pan and one pair of hands, and two of those things get tired.

No factory. No funny business. No focus group deciding whether the strawberries are on brand. Just fruit, sugar, heat and a wooden spoon that has seen things.

The Jam Man was unavailable for further comment, being up to his elbows in it.

What's in the pot this week

Strawberry & Ting

The classic. No messing about — sweet strawberries and enough sugar to make your dentist wince.

"Boss on toast"

Blackcurrant Bevvy

Deep, dark and dead moreish. Puts hairs on your chest and jam on your chin, usually at the same time.

"Went down like a bomb"
Gone. Sorry.

Apricot Chancer

A bit posh, this one. Sold out by Tuesday, which it will never stop going on about.

"Fancy that, eh"

Apple & Ginger Giz

A bit of a kick to it. Wakes you up quicker than your mam shouting up the stairs.

"Proper zingy, that"

Cherry Bomb

Small batch, big flavour — bit like everyone from round our way, if you think about it.

"Sound as a pound"

Marmalade, Like

For the traditionalists. Bitter enough to remind you of Mondays, sweet enough to get you through them.

"Nan's seal of approval"

The damage

Letters to the editor

Page 11 · Have your say

Is it actually homemade, or is that just what it says on the jar?

It's made in an actual home, by an actual person, in an actual pan. No factory, no funny business. When it goes wrong we own it — usually with the smoke alarm as a witness.

Brenda, Bootle

How long does it keep?

Unopened, ages — that's the whole point of jam, it's been keeping things since before fridges were invented. Once you crack the lid, get stuck in. It won't hang about long enough to worry about.

Kev, Kirkby

Can I get a mix of flavours in the two for a fiver?

Course you can. Two different ones, two of the same, or one for you and one you've absolutely no intention of sharing — whatever takes your fancy.

Sandra, Speke

Do you deliver, or am I coming to get it?

Local drop-offs and pickups both sorted. Fill the coupon in and we'll work out where and when. No vans with sirens, don't worry.

Tommo, Toxteth

What's actually in it?

Fruit, sugar, lemon juice and time. That's your lot. If you've got an allergy, say so on the coupon and we'll tell you exactly what went in that batch.

Michelle, Wavertree

Right, go 'ead then

Three quid a jar. Two for a fiver. Best jam this side of the Mersey — probably the other side an' all, but we've not checked, and frankly we've got jam to make.
